How YOU fit in

Bonjour!
Here in the States it’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day today – which is a recognized and observed holiday – so most of us have long three-day weekends. I happen to have spent the weekend dog sitting/house sitting for some lovely friends of mine who jetted up to Montreal for the weekend (ahhh, my Jet-setting Jered). It’s been a quiet weekend, lot of writing, some minor soul searching and being afraid of the dark. Not in the literal sense but more in the sense of spending the whole weekend on your own – sometimes when I have to dive into writing my mind gets a little isolated and that can bring on the blues.
But I’m back from the depths and looking forward to some fun things going on this week. We can always choose in every moment and day to focus on what is missing, or what is present. I am learning as I get a little more expereince that the only people who suffer when we’re unhappy is us. Other people really don’t care that they’re the source of a lot of pain, discomfort or saddness for us because of thier acitons or behavior. They go on leading their lives while we sit at home in self-imposed sadness and wonder why they are acting how they are.
But this is where the good news comes in – we can never change or control other people. Yep, you’ve heard it before and I’m here to confirm it. I can’t change the people who most affect me. But I can change my attitude. And also my actions. If some pattern of acting and doing is turning out over and over again the same way – we can choose to try a new way of acting, thinking and being.
So while written a week ago, today’s Duchess Digest on Single Minded Women was written just as much for me as it was for any of you. If you’re wondering what all your problems have in common, here’s a hint: YOU. So read on and take away a few tips for moving forward and moving on from the same old problems. . . .

Helping Haiti

Bonjour!
I wanted to give all the Duchesses out there a link to a friend’s site over at Redefining the Meaning of Wealth. Paige has done a wonderful blog on helping and making a contribution to the organizations sending Aid to Haiti. I know for a lot of us it’s a challenging time in our own lives, like Paige mentions, but even $20.00 could be a life saver for these people.
Affirming and recognizing how blessed we are can help us in contributing to easing the suffering of others. Living in L.A. (aka earthquake waiting to happen) I know how scary it is to experience one of these natural disasters on a very minor scale, and it’s terrifying. To go through something so awful must not only be physically, but psychologically awful for the people of Haiti. Every little bit we can do to help them, in addition to money, even prayers and collective thoughts of healing and comfort – I believe it helps.
So check out Paige’s blog “Helping our Brothers and Sisters in Haiti” on Redefining the Meaning of Wealth and see if you can help in some way. . . I personally am donating to Doctors without Borders – as I think they’re a wonderful organization.
