Happiness is a muddy tennis ball

Bonjour!

Well Labrador thinks this morning has already started off with a bang; she discovered a tennis ball deep in the woods. She couldn’t be happier. Presently she is staring at me, panting, and continuously picking up, then dropping the ball by my chair as if to say, “Umm . . mom, could you go ahead and throw that please?” Nothing makes her happier in all the world (except maybe kibble). Her enthusiasm over such a small object makes me laugh.

Sometimes I try to think about if there is anything that makes me as happy as her apparent total satisfaction in a smelly, old Wilson ball. This is one of the reasons I love having a dog. They make you think about stuff like that all the time. Like how she is always totally in the present. How a walk off leash in the woods or a ball are total bliss to her. How she picks up on everyone’s energy totally effortlessly and greets the great people and dogs, while instinctively detouring, uninterested, around the grumpy, low-energy people.

I love my dog. She is the greatest. She teaches me little things about life every day. She is my little zen Labrador; quietly teaching me through the example of her own life what is means to love, be happy, be present and be loyal. Dogs are the best.
