The Sun’s in my heart and I’m ready for love

Good Morning Duchesses!

What a fantastic weekend I had! As I mentioned the week Obama became President – January was my month of saying, “Yes I can!” Many great experiences have come out of that challenge, one of which was my very first ever women’s conference on Saturday at the Luxe Hotel in Bel Air. Gina Ratliffe put on the “Ordinary Women Living Extraordinary Lives” Seminar and it was awesome. I was terrified going alone and with only the zygote of an idea for what Duchess can be – but that was, after all, the challenge. I’m so glad that I did- it was wonderful. The speakers, including Gina and many other “ordinary” women (although I hate to use that term because there’s nothing ordinary about the group – they were fabulous) were so inspirational, motivating and welcoming.

And it re-affirmed what my purpose is and what I want to come out of Duchess. Women need community. We need to lift each other up and really, truly love and support each other. I’m so glad I was able to be a part of that all day event and remember that beauty, kindness, spirituality and wealth are all parts of the integral woman, there is no exclusionary qualities that say you can only be one or another. Be it all! You already are; so let it come out and shine.

February is the month of love. So I wanted this month’s inspirational thoughts to be geared that way. Some will be quotes of agape, Eros,  filial or self-love; but all will be related to it. I bought a book at Barnes and Noble called “The Little Big Book of Love” and I recommend it. It’s cute and small and has lots of little quotes, recipes, love letter and journal entries related to the subject of l’amour.

Today’s is an excerpt from a letter sent by Winston Churchill to his wife Clementine on December 1, 1915. This is a man who was such an amazing leader and who also suffered from terrible depression (which he used to call his ‘black dog’). But six years into a marriage that would last 50 more years we get a glimpse at how this great man expressed his love . . .

“I reciprocate intensely the feelings of love and devotion you show to me. My greatest good fortune in a life of brilliant experience has been to find you, and to lead my life with you. I don’t feel far away from you out here at all. I feel very near in my heart; and also I feel that the nearer I get to honour, the nearer I am to you.”
